Expert Advice

Timing and Permissions for Tree Pruning

The best time to prune depends on the species. Many deciduous trees are best pruned during their dormant season in late autumn or winter, while some flowering and fruiting trees are better pruned just after flowering to avoid affecting growth. We’ll always advise on the right timing for your specific tree.

It’s also worth checking whether a tree is protected by a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) or sits within a conservation area, as permission from your local council may be required before significant pruning work can take place. We check for this during our free site visit and can guide you through what’s needed if permission applies.

As with all our work, we’re mindful of nesting birds and check trees carefully before carrying out major pruning during the main nesting season (roughly March to August).
