Expert Advice

When's the Best Time to Cut Your Hedges?

Most hedges benefit from at least one or two cuts a year, typically in late spring and late summer, to keep growth controlled and shape well maintained. Fast-growing varieties like leylandii and conifer may need more frequent attention.

It’s also important to be mindful of nesting birds. Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, it’s an offence to damage or destroy an active bird’s nest, so we always check hedges carefully before cutting and recommend avoiding major cutting work during the main nesting season (roughly March to August) where possible.

Most hedges benefit from one to two cuts per year, usually in late spring and late summer. Fast-growing varieties like leylandii may need more frequent trimming to stay under control.

Yes. We regularly bring overgrown and neglected hedges back under control. Severely overgrown hedges may need a phased approach over more than one visit to avoid stressing the plant.

In most cases you can trim a hedge up to the boundary line, but you should avoid cutting back into a neighbour’s side without agreement. We’re happy to talk through boundary considerations during your free site visit.

All hedge trimmings and green waste are cleared from site as part of the service, leaving your property clean and tidy.

Yes. We’re mindful of nesting season and always check hedges carefully before carrying out work, particularly between March and August.
